The Department of History and Civil Service Club, Sree Narayana College, Sivagiri, Varkala, in association with IQAC, organized an online Essay Writing Competition on “Nuclear Weapons and Global Peace: Lessons from Hiroshima and Nagasaki” on 7 August 2026 at 8:00 p.m. through Google Forms, as part of Freedom & Heritage Month.
The competition aimed to encourage students to critically examine the historical consequences of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings and reflect on nuclear warfare, disarmament and global peace. Students were allowed to write in English or Malayalam, with a time limit of 30 minutes and a word limit of 800–1000 words. Original handwritten submissions were required, with the use of AI tools and online sources prohibited.
The competition received 17 responses, with students from various disciplines participating. Revathy A. (III BSc Chemistry) secured First Position in the English stream, while Rajalakshmi RR (II BA Malayalam) secured First Position in the Malayalam stream. Second, Third and Consolation positions were also awarded in both streams.
The programme was coordinated by Dr. Aranya K. Sasi, Assistant Professor of History and Civil Service Club Coordinator, with the support of the Department of History, Civil Service Club and IQAC. The competition successfully promoted historical awareness, independent thinking, academic writing and peace consciousness among students.
